LIVELY ISLAND52°01'S, 58°28'W
Spanish name 'Isla Bougainville', after the French navigator Louis de Bougainville who established the first settlement in the Falklands. Lively Island lies east of East Falklands, about half way down the coast at the entrance to Choiseul Sound. Other smaller islands and islets in the Lively Island group surround the island and some are linked by sandbars. Lively has an area of some 5585 hectares (13,800 acres) and at its highest rises to 37m (121ft). The island has several streams and ponds the largest 'Enderby Pond' extending to 7 hectares (17 acres) and this is an important waterfowl habitat. The island is rat free so is excellent for wildlife. It is also still a sheep farm.
Two Cobb brothers, Henry and George, farmed for many years at Lively Island.
During the 1982 Falklands War with Argentina a battle took place in Seal Cove, a bay directly to the west of Lively Island.
